Why choose university life in Salamanca?

The city of Salamanca is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe and has a wide academic offer. Salamanca is the ideal city to live your university years surrounded by the best gastronomy and a unique cultural heritage.

What is it like to study in Salamanca?

Each year the city welcomes up to 30,000 students who mostly study at the University of Salamanca (USAL) with more than 800 years of history and an offer of 68 degrees and 75 official masters, from humanities to sciences, so the range is very wide.

Salamanca is a city well prepared for university life. You will find many options that will make your life more comfortable: good accommodation, bars, restaurants, monuments, libraries, sports areas, cultural offerings… it has it all! In addition, it is the university city par excellence and the young atmosphere is palpable in its streets.

What is the student’s social life like in this city?

If we talk about leisure, Salamanca has a very wide offer: from its museums and historical buildings, to a rich gastronomy and the best university atmosphere.

Within all this offer of activities and places to visit as a student, here you have the ones we consider essential.

Plaza Mayor

The Plaza Mayor is the heart of the city, the meeting point for any activity. It was built in the 18th century and is full of bars and restaurants where you can have a coffee or enjoy the delicious Salamancan food.

The Cathedral

The cathedral of Salamanca is not an ordinary cathedral, in fact, it is formed by two temples joined together. On the one hand, there is the Old Cathedral from the 12th-13th century and, on the other hand, the New Cathedral from the 16th century. Imagine studying next to these historic buildings!

Museums

You will also find super interesting museums such as the Cathedral Museum of Salamanca, located in the cloister of the Old Cathedral, the Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Deco Casa Lis or the Museum of Salamanca, where you can learn about the history of the city and soak up the popular culture. And, if you are more into modern art, the Domus Artium 2002 contemporary art museum is another ideal option.

Parties

If there is a place where there is a party every day, it is in Salamanca. The university atmosphere is guaranteed and you will find plenty of bars, restaurants and discos where you can enjoy your free time with your friends. Remember that on Tuesdays the Erasmus parties take place, every week with a different theme.

Bars for Tapear

To enjoy the best tapas bars you have to go to Van Dyck street, where you will find the best tapas at very reasonable prices. Another area to highlight is the Rúa Mayor, next to the cathedral, where there are also many bars to enjoy some ‘meneás’ potatoes or a pincho of roasted pig’s snout.

What is the food like in Salamanca?

Salamanca is one of the best places to eat and proof of this is the number of bars and restaurants that you can find in its streets. Its star dishes? The hornazo, a kind of pie stuffed with chorizo, ham and loin, and lentils from Armuña.

In addition, you will not be able to resist a tapa of ham from Guijuelo or some eggs with farinato, a must! And the churros with chocolate in the Plaza Mayor are a must for a Sunday afternoon. Oh, and you can not miss in your snacks Ledesma donuts, the typical sweet of the city.
